The Sizing & Battery Dilemma: 3 Engineering Bottlenecks Every Smart Ring Buyer Must Know

Smart rings look simple. Engineering one that actually works is not.

Unlike watches or bands, a ring has almost no room to compromise. Here are three bottlenecks every buyer should understand before sourcing:

1. Sizing is a supply chain problem, not just a design one. A ring must fit snugly for accurate PPG readings, but finger size varies far more than wrist size. Most brands need 8-10 SKUs per design just to cover the range, and buyers must plan inventory, sizing kits and return policies around this from day one — not as an afterthought.

2. Battery life fights physics. A ring battery is typically 15-30mAh, a fraction of a smartwatch’s capacity. Every sensor, every LED, every Bluetooth ping competes for that budget. The real differentiator between brands isn’t the sensor spec sheet — it’s the firmware’s power management, which determines whether a ring lasts 4 days or 7 on the same hardware.

3. Charging case design affects perceived reliability. Because the ring itself can’t hold much charge, the charging case becomes part of the product experience. Poor case design (weak magnetic alignment, slow charging, bulky size) is one of the most common sources of customer complaints — even when the ring itself works fine.

For buyers evaluating smart ring suppliers, the questions worth asking aren’t just “what sensors does it have” — they’re “how many sizes, what’s the actual battery life under real use, and how mature is the charging case design.”

As a wearable manufacturer working across rings, bands and watches, we see sizing and power management as the two areas that separate a good ring from a returned one.
